TX robberies, shootings where guns not welcome

In all places, Texas has now joined the growing conflict between open carry demonstrators and the anti-gun pressure brought to bear on major restaurant chains. In mid-May there were two demonstrators with rifles in a Dallas Chipotle. There was also a demonstration by Open Carry Texas on May 5 at a Fort Worth Jack in the Box where, having received no notice from the group, police were called and responded to the event as an armed robbery. Since that time both Chipotle and Jack in the Box have requested that guns not be brought into their stores. On Friday it was announced that Sonic and Chili’s followed suit.

This raises the kind of questions in the pro-gun crowd that have many various opinions. Do private property rights trump the right to bear arms? Are these kind of protests doing more harm than good to the Second Amendment movement? Are these demonstrations causing fear or creating support?

It would seem, at least at first blush that the anti-gun crowd has much more influence on corporate policy. However, the outcome predicted by many in the pro-gun crowd is that banning guns increases crime. At least at Jack in the Box, this does seem to be the case.

In the ten days or so since this policy was announced, they have been the victim of 3 armed robberies. One involved both the restaurant and the customers being robbed by 4 men who donned masks and gloves. One of the four was caught when a customer followed the suspect’s vehicle according to this story.

Apparently they did not follow the story from last August where 6 armed men were holding up a Denny’s in SE Houston when one of the customers came out of the restroom, saw her brother on the floor at gunpont, and proceeded to draw her legally carried weapon and open fire.  No customers were hurt, and the robbers fled. This is a situation that is heating up all over the country for the last months, and will likely continue to do so as the rights of the people are hotly contested.

SAF court victory in Arkansas

“a federal judge ruled the state’s concealed carry licensing law that bans legal resident aliens from obtaining permits is unconstitutional”

Another small victory, but each step towards the liberty of the people being restored is a good one. Keep in mind it’s the smaller groups like the Second Amendment Foundation, Gun Owners of America, and Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership that do not believe in compromise like so many state groups and larger political machines such as the NRA.

Breaking news – MN neighbor dispute turns deadly

Few details are available other than this was an ongoing dispute, that ended in one dead, one wounded and the shooter turning themselves in after the incident.

The statistics have long proven that the vast majority of homicide victims in some way knew their attacker. This case is no different. The sad reality is most of these incidents would likely in some way have been preventable had things been handled differently.

This is why we teach many things that others do not. How to stay alive and out of prison is a much different matter than merely meeting a minimum standard for a permit to carry.

As always, we extend our sympathies to any innocents harmed and their loved ones.

Good samaritan slain chasing robbery suspect

This tragic event outlines why attempting to stop a criminal is often a bad idea. Would this have turned out differently if he had a firearm? Perhaps, perhaps not. Once you enter into a situation where violence is present or likely, all bets are off. You may or may not see the attack coming in time to deploy a weapon. There are potential legal issues as well, and then of course Murphy’s law.

Gun Control on the march

The DOJ and the Obama administration are seeking funds to further the gun control agenda.

2 teens and 1 adult charged in violent robberies in Henn Co, MN

While we do teach a variety of physical and weapons skills as well as permits to carry, we have always maintained that awareness and avoidance are the key factors in self-defense and included this in ALL of our training courses.

Bus stops have always been at a higher risk for crime, and train/bus stops have been the top targets for robberies in Minneapolis, comprising 8 of ten hot spots for 2013. If you choose to use transit, it would be wise to learn of the increased dangers you face in doing so, and taking measures to reduce those risks.

STORY ON TRANSIT ROBBERIES HERE

The first assault involved a man as he got off a metro transit bus around midnight on March 16. The teens hit him in the head and stabbed him in an artery in his neck, nearly killing him.  The next incident was also at a bus stop near midnight ten days later. When the victim got off the bus, the teens ran up to him and tripped him. When he got to his feet, they tackled him, punched and kicked him in the head, and stabbed him in the ribs, puncturing his lung. This was also a near fatal wound.

After the third assault at a mall parking lot they were finally spotted by police and apprehended.

Former KKK leader kills 3 at Jewish center in KS

Enough details are already available about this tragedy to confirm that 3 people have been killed, including a 14 year old boy who was an Eagle Scout and his grandfather, as well as an as-yet unidentified woman.

The suspect, Fraiser Glenn Cross Jr., of Aurora, Mo, was taken into custody near the scene of the shooting and booked on first degree murder.

This kind of hate knows no bounds, whether skin color, religion, sex, age or economic class. People of all stripes should learn the basics of personal protection even if just the understanding of the realities of crimes like this, and how to be more aware. Even for those who do not choose firearms as a means of protection there are plenty of things one can do to stay safe.

Again, our hearts go out to the victims and all those affected by this senseless, hateful act.

Nullification in NY SAFE Act

We have been watching this for a while, and it looks like another state is going to have serious issues with strong gun control legislation. While real numbers cannot be had, as there is a secrecy clause in the law that prohibits disclosure of registration figures. Supposed leaks in the police estimate 3-5k of 1 million expected.

Time will be the tell of the tale on this one, but one thing is certain. Interesting times are ahead.

Despite armed security, 24 injured in knife attack at PA school

Another tragic incident in a ‘victim disarmament zone’. Despite the presence of an armed private security guard, the assailant was able to wound well over 20 people before being subdued. Details are still emerging, but we are unsure
why the guard would not attempt to gain suspect compliance with his firearm, rather than try to control and handcuff him which resulted in the guard being stabbed in the stomach. An unarmed vice-principal was the one who managed to get the attacker to the ground.

Unlike guns, knives are quiet and it makes it much harder for bystanders to know an attack is underway.

Update: The attacker has been named, he is 16 year old Alex Hribal and he will be tried as an adult.

Our hearts go out to all the victims and their families and friends.
